My Infoworld Open Sources article for this week is now live. It takes the demise of Google Reader as a reminder that without open source software processing open standards, we have no freedom to “rehost and carry on”.

I’ve been using Linux myself for the past 10 years (at home) and opensource programs on windows at work – noticed that this may not be true.
Eg. Since I am a working class and have to comply to company IT policies. Recently, my company is standardizing Outlook as the email client and I needed to convert my past 10 years Thunderbird email history to pst.
To my horror and disappointment, this seems like an impossible task. After losing my email history, I no longer have the morale courage to tell colleagues to use opensource alternative any more.
Sad.
