☆ Contribute To The LibreOffice Conference

I am on the Programme Committee for the upcoming LibreOffice Conference in Paris, and as a consequence I get to see the stream of paper submissions. There have already been a lot of diverse submissions and it’s already clear it will be a very interesting conference, but there is still room for more. Make sure you get your submission in before the August 8th deadline.

Of course, you can also contribute as a delegate. Registration is free and you can do it easily now. I suggest registering early as space is going to be at a premium.

☞ The Open Cloud Initiative

Yesterday saw the launch of the Open Cloud Initiative here at OSCON in Portland. It has the potential to steer the evolution of cloud computing just as the Open Source Initiative did. With every cloud provider today either using centralised service or proprietary software as a way to lock in customers, this is extremely timely.

You can read more about this in my article on ComputerWorldUK.

☞ Subversions

  • The Internet never forgets.
  • A more detailed article explaining the problem VLC is having with companies using not just the code (which they are free to do) but also the reputation of an open source project as part of dubious business practices. This is a massive problem for the most famous open source brands, and I am especially worried that there’s no-one protecting OpenOffice.org end-user from these sorts of scams at present or, as far as I can tell, any time in the near future.
  • The arrangement to prop up SUSE continues.
  • A patent application published by the USPTO last Thursday reveals that Microsoft has been researching, since before December 2009, how to redirect VoIP calls to intercept devices and law enforcement agents. The method disclosed by the patent application is devious—subverting routing protocols so that packets sent by any person tagged by a monitoring request will be routed through a recording agent.”

Guessing this is not just a speculative filing. It covers all uses of VoIP including in-game and via-IM.

Heading West To SFO, a set on Flickr.

A delightfully clear afternoon flying across Nevada to San Francisco allowed me to take some splendid photographs. Check out especially the shot of Half Dome and the colours of the salt pans in San Francisco Bay.

Pie Charts In The Plains, a set on Flickr.

Flying from Chicago to San Francisco today I was struck by the fact that there were bar charts, pie charts and many more visible everywhere.

Ⓕ Drinks With ForgeRock at OSCON

Will you be in Portland (the one in Oregon in the USA) next week?  ForgeRock would love to meet you during OSCON.  Join us at Kells at 6pm on Thursday July 28th (it’s an easy and free Max ride from the Convention Center and you can easily make it back for the State of the Onion if you need to).  Come to our session on Thursday morning to collect a wrist band for unlimited free drinks!

In case you’re not familiar with ForgeRock, we’re a rapidly-growing startup that’s taking a radical software-freedom-first approach to creating an identity-oriented application platform – SAML, LDAP, provisioning, single-sign-on and much more. The software we’re developing is already mature and is already in use at around 50 of the worlds most interesting  high-scale technologically aggressive companies. At OSCON I’ll be joined by colleagues to explain our philosophy and our software.

Afterwards, maybe some Norwegian music is in order? One of my favourite Norwegian musicians, Thomas Dybdahl, is playing the Doug Fir Lounge at 9pm.
